That was really hard. "She sees that I'm a woman who is running my own business," says Berkner. Berkner is married to Brian Mueller, who was formerly a bassist in the Laurie Berkner Band. "It did really feel like I was choosing my family over my ego at that moment, and I think I really needed to do that personally."One key to Berkner's longevity is that she's figured out how to stay relevant during what has been one of the most tumultuous times in the history of the music business. âHeâs an amazing person to have on your team as a supporter,â Berkner boasts, âI think thatâs part of what has made him a good therapist.â As someone whose own marriage found the earlier stages of our daughterâs life (and we didnât even work together) challenging, I greatly appreciate Berknerâs candor, especially after learning that she and her husband have ultimately been together for more than 25 years.âI remember so many people saying how lucky I was to have a career in kidsâ music because I could incorporate my own children into it so easily. During this period, Berkner's husband Brian stopped being the bassist in her band in order to become a psychologist. Lucy taught me how to slow down. After all, you never forget your first concert.She fell pregnant just as her band got big. She promised him she would only work one weekend day a week, meaning she would work a paltry six days, instead of seven. She's sung on Berkner's records, been in her music videos, tossed out beach balls from the stage, and sold merchandise at the shows. âAs soon as [her daughter Lucy] became a toddler, she was keenly aware of me being nearby but inaccessible during the shows, and even more so during meet-and-greets when many other children found their way onto my lap. They have one daughter named Lucy Mueller (b. September 2004). If she had decided to crowd surf, these amped-up toddlers—most of them probably on a sugar high from apple juice—would have summoned the strength to support her.One big career boost for Berkner arrived way back in 2004, when she started appearing on what was then called the Noggin TV channel (now Nick Jr.). I just really feel grateful to be alive.âAs Lucy has grown, though, so has her role in Berknerâs career. Most of all, they were beaming with unadulterated joy.Berkner recalls doing one show at Central Park SummerStage in New York City, where she lives, while eight months pregnant: "I couldn't sit down without getting dizzy. âKidsâ music was my passion, not his. Walking down the block was a 20-minute experience," she says.Movement, after all, is a must at these shows. In September 2004, Laurie’s daughter, Lucy, was born.
