Be prepared for rain, mist and mystique. This active volcano is one of the few places in the world that you have the chance to see both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea at the same time. The weather looked clear so it didn’t seem that it would be too dangerous. The distance from Boquete town to the Volcan Baru hike entrance is 11 kilometers. Some of the jungle scenes on the way down are beautiful and almost worth the hike in themselves.To get back to Boquete from Volcan Baru you have cheaper options available than when you arrived. Parts of the trail were muddy and the last climb to the summit is rocky and so I was pleased I had taken my sturdier leather hiking boots, as opposed to the lighter trail walking shoes.
The photos I took on the rocks was on a completely dry day as you can see from the sun! However, this is definitely a trail you need to be physically and mentally prepared to tackle - particularly if it rains.Schwer! *TIP: Leave at 1230am from Boquete town and you will have timed the run much better than us.There isn’t too much to see during the night except for a few nice vistas of the city lights. There is a rough and very steep 4x4 road to the top from near Boquete.
Our mission was to reach the highest point in Panama in time to watch the sunrise from our viewpoint above the clouds. The hike operates rain or shine, unless of course there is a major weather even that shuts down the Volcan Baru National Park. There are a couple makes of autos that the Panamanians advise will actually make the treacherous road. The final trail to the summit is quite steep but we were motoring. This was echoed by a local guide I had asked and the front-desk staff at Mamallena.Volcan Baru height: The Volcano is 3475m above sea level making it the highest point in Panama. Volcán Barú is a 15.8 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Boquete District, Chiriquí, Panama that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as difficult. We could now see the radio towers and had already noticed that the clouds were in fact, below us.Hiking Volcan Baru was my favorite moment from my Panama trip so far and I highly suggest it. From Mamallena hostel, they have a standard rate of $7 per person or a minimum of $20 for their regular taxi man.
